Danny Cowley sends Portsmouth message after League One title win last night

Danny Cowley has sent John Mousinho and Portsmouth a message after the Blues secured the League One title on Tuesday evening.

It was a night to remember for the Fratton Faithful as Conor Shaughnessy powered home a 90th-minute header to cap a brilliant comeback win against Barnsley.

The Tykes started brightest and took the lead through Devante Cole before Kusini Yengi equalised three minutes later. John McAtee put the visitors back in front with 30 minutes to play.

However, the evening’s drama started seven minutes from time. Christian Saydee was fouled by McAtee in the box in the 83rd minute, allowing Colby Bishop to power home a composed spot-kick.

Shaughnessy then slammed home a header meaning the Blues end their 12-year Championship exodus.

The job John Mousinho has done on the South Coast cannot be understated, and his predecessor, Danny Cowley, has sent the 37-year-old a message.

Cowley was sacked in January 2023 after his side’s alarming run down the table. The now Colchester United boss will always be remembered fondly due to his connection with the fanbase at Fratton Park.

Much like Mousinho, Cowley understood how important it was to dive head-first into what is required from a Portsmouth manager.

Taking to X on Tuesday evening, Cowley wrote: “What a brilliant achievement for a truly special football club. John Mousinho, the incredible staff & players have performed just brilliantly throughout the season.

It brings me so much joy to see the happiness that this success has brought to the people of Pompey. Enjoy! PUP.”

Danny Cowley continues to maintains a high reputation among Portsmouth fans

Whenever Cowley does return to Fratton Park as an opposition manager, he will be warmly received.

His methods didn’t quite work out during his time in charge of the club, but his personality and reputation are still held in high regard.

He added the likes of Joe Rafferty, Marlon Pack, Zak Swanson and Colby Bishop to the squad – all of whom have been immense this season.

Cowley’s message is yet another reminder that he is firmly one of the EFL good guys.
