Ex-England midfielder believes Pompey are ‘promotion favourites’

Former England man, Carlton Palmer believes that Portsmouth have the potential to be promoted this season, naming them as one of his favourites.

Portsmouth are currently top of League One and are undefeated, eight games into the new season.

Following statement wins against Peterborough United and Barnsley, their promotion credentials are well and truly alive.

Last time out at Oakwell, John Mousinho’s side sped into a three-goal lead before the 20-minute mark with Colby Bishop scoring after eight.

Paddy Lane and Connor Ogilvie completed the scoring, which was enough to secure a 3-2 win over fellow promotion hopefuls.

What has Carlton Palmer said?

Palmer played for many teams over a variety of different levels across the English football pyramid.

With over 30 years as a footballer, playing for West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United, he has plenty of experience.

He also made 18 appearances for the England senior team across his lengthy career.

When asked about Pompey, he said: “Portsmouth are top of the league after having a fantastic start to the season.

“They are unbeaten on 16 points but it is too early to say that they are clear favourites for the title.”

Given the fact that it is a new team under an aspiring manager, there are no guarantees but it’s been a great start.

The league table is tight, but Pompey are still topping the pile.

On the table, Palmer said: “Exeter and Port Vale both are on 16 points, down to 11th place in the league it’s only separated by four points.”

It is hard to say where the season may go but the Englishman said: “I think they’re looking very good for promotion but there’s still a long way to go.”

Who knows where Pompey’s future lies but they are looking good so far.
