‘Finishing wasn’t good enough’: Manager slams team after draw

Portsmouth drew 3-3 to Fulham Under 21s in the EFL Trophy. Scoring just three from 30 shots on goal.

Pompey manager John Mousinho showed his frustration post match, following his side’s draw against ten man Fulham.

Georgios Okkas was sent off for the away side.

Two from Sean Raggett and one from Terry Devlin saw them take the lead twice before being pegged back.

Mousinho’s side managed to prevail on penalties 5-4. This didn’t improve the managers mood around the game.

What has John Mousinho said?

“The finishing just wasn’t good enough in both halves.”

This summed up the game for the hosts, more than 30 shots and only three goals just can’t happen.

Especially against ten men, against an under 21s side, this should of been a thrashing.

There were elements of bad luck that the manager understood: “e hit the post, we hit the bar, the goalkeeper pulled off a couple of brilliant saves, but overall we should be scoring a lot more than we did on the night.”

Mousinho was pleased with the amount of chances, just not the poor finishing.

The main problem was complacency: “It’s about mindset and making sure that when you do go into those situations you don’t get too complacent.

“We were a bit sloppy in our finishing and that’s where I can be critical.”

There were 11 changes to the League One side but the team was good enough to win over a ten man side.

“There’s no comparison to make between the League One game and the EFL Trophy, we still want to keep standards high in terms of the lads coming in and playing, they obviously have got to be pushing for starting places as well.”

This can act as a reality check for a lot of the squad players at the club as they push for starting 11 places.

Despite a negative result, this can act as a sliding door moment and a spring board for the rest of the season.
