John Mousinho suggests 26-year-old Portsmouth player is out of Peterborough game this weekend

Portsmouth head to Peterborough United on Saturday in what is a massive clash in the League One promotion race.

John Mousinho’s side sit nine points ahead of Posh, having played one more game.

With Bolton and Derby playing on Saturday, this weekend promises to be pivotal ahead of the season’s remaining fixtures.

The Pompey boss has been talking to the local media ahead of the fixture. Lee Evans is set to feature for the first time, having previously been on the bench for the midweek win over Burton Albion.

Mousinho has also provided an update on another one of his injured midfielders, Ben Stevenson.

Talking to the Portsmouth News, the Pompey boss suggested Saturday’s fixture will come too soon for the 26-year-old.

“Ben Stevenson trained fully on Wednesday, which is another step in the right direction. We think Saturday would be too soon for him,” he said.

On Evans’ involvement, the Pompey boss added: “Lee was on the bench and then trained again Wednesday, so Peterborough is certainly an option.

“Considering he has been out for such a long time, he has been very, very good in training. We’re really pleased to have a player of that quality coming into the building at this stage of the season.”

Evans could be an excellent option for the Pompey boss to call upon between now and the end of the season.

The 29-year-old has been promoted from League One three times with Wigan, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.

Games at promotion rivals require experienced heads, and Evans is exactly that. With the former Ipswich Town man now in contention, Mousinho does have a selection dilemma to contend with.

Owen Moxon’s performances are improving, but the 26-year-old is still finding his feet at Fratton Park. It could be risky to throw him in against one of the league’s most potent attacks.

However, selection headaches are not the worst problem for the Pompey boss.
