What Portsmouth players sung in the dressing room moments after winning League One title

Portsmouth were crowned League One champions on Tuesday evening after their thrilling 3-2 victory over Barnsley.

Conor Shaughnessy was the hero for John Mousinho’s side after the Irishman powered home a bullet header in the 90th minute to secure the League One title.

Goals from Kusini Yengi and Colby Bishop meant Pompey were on the cusp of automatic promotion. However, a draw would’ve seen the Blues’ title aspirations wait until Saturday’s clash against Wigan Athletic.

But, late drama ensued as Shaughnessy rose highest to fire in an emphatic header and sent Fratton Park into complete chaos.

Celebrations, unsurprisingly, went long into the night.

After 19,000 Pompey fans flooded the Fratton Park turf, Mousinho’s squad reconvened in the dressing room and were heard lauding their manager.

They sang: “Who needs Mourinho? We’ve got Mousinho.” A chant that has long been sang by the fanbase during the course of the season.

What next for Portsmouth and John Mousinho?

The dust will have to settle after what was truly a special night at Fratton Park. No ground in the country can match the PO4 atmosphere generated when on song.

Wigan Athletic and Lincoln City are to come before the end of the season as Mousinho’s side look to break their all-time league points tally. What state the players are in remains to be seen!

Eventually, attention will have to turn to next season and what needs to be done to remain competitive in the Championship. Survival has to be the sole aim.

Richard Hughes and the recruitment team know this squad needs improving. This season, they have consistently ground out results, but extra quality is required upon returning to the second tier.
