Pompey interested in young Premier League forward loan deal

20-year old striker Nathan Butler-Oyedeji is of interest to Portsmouth with a loan deal being discussed with Arsenal.

The youngster has been linked with a whole host of League One teams.

Cheltenham Town, Cambridge United, Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic have all shown interest.

The Arsenal academy graduate spent last season on loan at Accrington Stanley, but failed to score in 11 appearances.

He has already scored in the Premier League 2 this season however.

Should Portsmouth sign Nathan Butler-Oyedeji?

With the injury to Kusini Yengi, it may appear that Pompey need striker reinforcements.

With Colby Bishop, there is a top striker available who has scored two in five games.

There is Christian Saydee already at the club who can play upfront and even Abu Kamara can fill in.

Talking about Yengi earlier this month, John Mousinho had said: “By the time he comes back, we’d then have four centre-forwards in the building, we might be a bit too heavy at that point.”

By this logic, this signing wouldn’t make too much sense.

The main reason that this signing might happen is if someone is potentially leaving.

This, or his youthful nature means as a squad player he can play less minutes and make an impact when he gets them.

From both sides of the coin, this transfer doesn’t appear to benefit either.

Pompey get a young striker, without a senior goal, and will likely have to make assurances to how much he will play.

Butler-Oyedeji has plenty of offers on the table, if reports are to be believed, so more game time is likely to sway him.

If Yengi’s injury layoff has taken a turn for the worse then the youngster is a useful option.

If Yengi is back soon, this signing wouldn’t be very clever.
