Andrew Moon shares latest on John Mousinho being offered new Portsmouth contract

BBC Sport’s Andrew Moon has been discussing John Mousinho’s Portsmouth future on his latest episode of Moon’s Musings.

Pompey secured their spot in the Championship for the 2024/25 season on Tuesday evening, beating Barnsley 3-2 on a historic night at Fratton Park.

Conor Shaughnessy was the hero, with the Irishman powering home a 90th-minute header to secure promotion and the League One title.

Now that promotion has been secured, Pompey fans will be looking ahead to what promises to be a busy pre-season.

The last time the club was promoted, manager Paul Cook jumped ship a matter of days after the League Two title had been lifted.

The ever-reliable Moon has since shed a light on whether he thinks a new contract is in store for Mousinho.

“I think everyone who played a significant role will automatically get a bonus and a pay rise,” he said. “Obviously, Paul Cook won a League Two promotion, wanted a new contract and then left pretty quickly.

“I wouldn’t rule out Pompey offering him a new contract, but he is under contract for the foreseeable future. I don’t see him doing a Paul Cook.”

Unfortunately, the BBC Sport journalist did suggest that a bigger Championship club poaching Mousinho couldn’t be ruled out.

“But here’s the caveat: the type of person John Mousinho is,” he added.

“He’s an ambitious person; ultimately, if a top Championship club looking for promotion were to come in for him next season, I don’t think more money would make much difference. There’s a realistic chance he might depart and go. I would be astonished if we saw a Cook-esque exit.”
