Portsmouth can now do something that hasn’t been done in 20 years after title triumph

Portsmouth still have plenty to play for in their remaining Sky Bet League One fixtures against Wigan Athletic and Lincoln City.

The Blues’ 3-2 win over Barnsley secured their place in the Championship and the third-tier title.

Celebrations ran late into the early hours and spilt into Wednesday morning. Who can blame the players and the fans? Pompey have spent 12 years outside the Championship.

Once the blue smoke has settled at PO4, attention will turn to Saturday’s League One clash against Wigan Athletic. And considering the state of some of the Blues’ players, the Latics will probably fancy their chances of causing an upset.

The upcoming fixtures against Wigan and Lincoln City could see the Blues do something that hasn’t been done for 20 years.

John Mousinho’s side currently sit on 94 points, meaning they can still become centurions and do something only Sheffield United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle have achieved.

Furthermore, there’s a club record now well within the Blues’ sights.

Portsmouth’s record points tally came in the 2003/04 season. Harry Redknapp’s side – spearheaded by Paul Merson – amassed 98 points on their way to the Championship title.

A win and draw will see the Blues match the record. Back-to-back victories will see them set a new record and reach the 100-point mark.

Will Portsmouth reach a new milestone?

On current form, it’s hard to rule out the Blues beating the record. Both fixtures are undoubtedly winnable, particularly the home game against the Latics, with Shaun Maloney’s side now having very little to play for.

The trip to Lincoln appears to be slightly more testing. Michael Skubala’s men are in the hunt for a playoff spot and sit just two points behind Oxford United in sixth.

Lincoln’s win over the U’s on Tuesday evening felt like a significant moment in their bid to land a top-six berth. If they pick up three points against Cheltenham on Saturday, their playoff ambitions will be firmly alive and kicking ahead of Pompey’s trip to the LNRE Stadium.
