‘Brilliant’ Portsmouth star can do something he’s never done before in Bolton clash

One Portsmouth player can achieve something he’s never done before against Bolton Wanderers this weekend.

The Blues head to the Toughsheet Stadium knowing that a win will secure promotion back to the Championship.

Pompey have spent 12 years outside the second tier and were perilously close to falling out of the EFL before Paul Cook steered the Blues back into League One.

Their seven-season stint in the third tier appears to be nearing its conclusion.

The equation is pretty simple for John Mousinho: three points will see his side promoted to the Championship and inflict a potentially fatal blow to the Trotters’ automatic hopes.

For the travelling support, there’s the genuine possibility of witnessing a historic day in the club’s recent history.

It’s not just the Blues who could make history on Saturday. Pompey’s “brilliant” talisman could break a personal record.

What can Colby Bishop do against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday?

Colby Bishop netted twice against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, taking his 2023/24 total to 20 goals.

If the 27-year-old nets one more goal, it will break his best-ever league tally as an EFL player.

Bishop netted 20 league goals last season, 12 in 2021/23 for Accrington Stanley, and ten the season before.

He’s scored 24 times for Pompey in 2022/23. However, four of those goals came in cup competitions.

If he does reach this personal milestone, it will provide further proof that the former non-league star is the Blues’ out-and-out number nine.

Kusini Yengi has provided stern competition this season, but after recent displays, it’s clear why Mousinho favours the Englishman. After Saturday’s 3-1 win, the Pompey boss said: “It’s a fantastic achievement. He did it for a side that was struggling a bit more last season, while this time, he’s got another number nine competing for that spot.

“To get those important goals in the past few days is exactly what he deserves because he’s been absolutely brilliant.”
