Pompey keeper admits style of play could cost his side this season

Portsmouth goalkeeper, Will Norris has said that building play has its risks but the benefits outweigh any negativity.

Norris has been in top form this season, keeping three clean sheets and only conceding a further two league goals.

This season, John Mousinho has opted for a style of football, playing out from the back involving the goalkeeper heavily.

He spent last season on loan at Peterborough United last season, before signing permanently for Pompey this summer.

With the tactical direction revolving around playing out from the back there are some issues that can be caused.

What has Will Norris said?

When mistakes ultimately occur in this system, goals will be conceded but with that being said, more goals will be scored as a result.

On this point, Norris said: “You’re not necessarily going to be able to quantify how much you gain from it.

“But you’re going to control games you wouldn’t necessarily control if you were just kicking it up the pitch.”

The goalkeeper is fully on board with this direction and believes in it.

Long ball football doesn’t happen very often anymore which he doesn’t want to do: “If you kick it up the pitch you’re going to give teams momentum coming back the other way.

“If you control those small moments where you do beat the press and play out you’re going to control more games.”

On the risks of this football he said: “Yes, you may concede one or two which do look terrible, but you may control 10 games of football previously to that happening.”

It is working so far under Mousinho and long may it continue.
